FAQ

Why do you only work with girls?

Gender inequality continues to be prevalent in American society. Girls Inc. recognizes the unique challenges that girls face, and is committed to providing programming that helps compensate for these inequalities. While society’s expectations affect both boys and girls, studies show that girls are more disadvantaged by them. Gender-specific programming lets girls focus on their real interests, at their own pace, free from distractions and comparisons.  The all-girl option allows girls to plunge into activities without worrying about whether they “belong” or not — or whether they’re more or less skilled than boys.

How can I get my daughter involved in Girls Inc.?

The primary outlet for Girls Inc. programming in the greater Portland, OR area is our After School Girls Groups. Please see our current Girls Group listings to find a program for your daughter. If we are not currently serving your neighborhood or school, please contact us to learn about other options.

How can I volunteer with Girls Inc.?

Girls Inc. of NW Oregon offers a fulfilling, in-depth volunteer experience for our Girls Guide volunteers. We also offer additional opportunities to serve on special event steering committees, volunteer in our administrative office, or help out on-site at a special event. Please see our volunteer page to apply to be a Girls Guide, or see other current volunteer opportunities.

What programs do you offer to achieve your  mission?

Programs based on research gathered at the Girls Inc. National Resource Center encourage girls ages 6 to 18 to take risks and master physical, intellectual, and emotional challenges. Through our Girls Group programming, Girls Inc. of NW Oregon offers age-specific modules of the researched, proven Girls Incorporated curriculum. We also provide additional opportunities for girls to participate in our Girls Take Off! weekend adventure programming, our Girls Council (the girl leadership body of Girls Inc. of NW Oregon), and our CommuniCARE group. All Girls Inc. programming was designed from inception with girls’ needs in mind. Through each program we carefully measure outcomes based on pre- and post-surveys.

Why are you unique?

Unlike other youth organizations, Girls Incorporated has a dual focus. We work to help girls become strong, smart, and bold so that they can tackle the challenges they face. At the same time, we work to change the world to make it a more equitable place for girls. We prepare girls to be the leaders of the twenty-first century, and we’re determined to make the twenty-first century a time when girls can lead.

Why is Girls Inc. needed?

Imagine our community where all of our girls are safe, healthy, thriving, and ready to realize their full potential as productive and contributing citizens.

Much has changed over the years, but growing up to be a healthy, confident and independent female continues to be a daunting task. The mission of Girls Inc., to “inspire all girls to be strong, smart, and bold,” assists girls to triumph over challenging and complex issues they face, including economic disparity, societal expectations, negative body image, abuse, depression, and increasing violence. How to create healthy, smart, and engaged girls is not a mystery and the costs of ignoring these issues by denying healthy development to some or all girls is enormous.

For hundreds of girls facing social and economic challenges, Girls Inc. of NW Oregon provides the safe space, the encouragement and the programs they need in order to envision a brighter future and to see within themselves a person defined by more than their external circumstances. For these girls, being a Girls Inc. girl can be one of the most important opportunities they will ever receive.

Who participates in Girls Inc. programs?

Girls Inc. programming is open to ALL girls.  Girls who participate in our programs come from across the greater Portland, OR area, range in age from 8 to 18 and come from a variety of backgrounds, including Caucasian, African-American, Latina, Native American, and Asian, among others.
